Wayne Action for Racial Equality is pleased to announce the 2022 Timothy Barber Scholarship Awards. Top honors of $1500 were awarded to Malana Alden, Ruben A. Cirillo/Gananda High School and to Anna YahDolo Szarek, Newark High School.   A third award of $1000 was awarded to Latrell Green of Williamson Senior High School.  The higher education scholarships are given annually to graduating Wayne County African American high school seniors who recognize that racism is a detriment to human development and are using their talents to ensure the equal rights of all to achieve their potential.

Malana Alden is graduating from the Ruben A Cirillo/Gananda High School.  Her high school years included many areas of interest: chorus, band, yearbook club, basketball, and soccer while on honor roll. Malana’s professional goal is to help others through their own challenges. Her chosen path toward this goal is to become an Occupational Therapist. Malana is starting her studies at Finger Lakes Community College.

Anna Yah Dolo Szarek is graduating from Newark High School. Anna was a scholar athlete and received sportsmanship and coaches awards. She participated in school choirs; musicals, jazz and school band and is a member of the National Honor Society.  Her many years of working with children locally and in the Dominican Republic have led her to the professional goal of counseling children. She plans to reach her goal by majoring in social work with a Masters Degree in counseling. She will be attending Liberty University in Virginia.

LaTrell Green is graduating from Williamson Senior High School where he participated in indoor and outdoor track, choir and select choir.  LaTrell’s fascination with video games and his recognition of the importance of cybersecurity have influenced his career choice in the field of computer science and cybersecurity. He will start at Monroe Community College with plans to further his studies at a college such as RIT.
